The Herbert Barrington Slater Council of Allied Masonic Degrees in East Lancashire met on 11th July, and it wasn’t just the ritual that was impressive—the weather certainly made its presence felt! With temperatures soaring above 25°C in Salford, it may well have been one of the warmest Council meetings on record.
Thankfully, there was plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits to keep everyone going. Very British… although a few ice creams might have been just as welcome! ☕🍪🍦
Practice got underway at 10:00 am, and with the Lodge room feeling more like a conservatory than a temple, jackets were wisely abandoned in favour of comfort. Even so, everything ran smoothly.

The Worshipful Master, Steven Graham, opened the Council and guided the business with his usual good humour. A warm welcome (literally!) was given to W.Bro. Robert Summers, attending for the first time as an Acting Grand Steward of Grand Council. He delivered his response admirably and, despite the heat, managed to keep his composure—and almost all of his perspiration!
The Council then transformed into a Lodge of Grand Tylers of Solomon, where three candidates received a superb ceremony delivered by the officers of the Lodge. All three acquitted themselves exceptionally well and can be proud of their performance.
After returning to the Council of St Lawrence, the remaining business was completed, including the appointment of officers for the ensuing year.
Bro Martin Wootton and Bro Anthony Smith both received their certificates proving they had completed all five of the degrees in the order.

Despite the soaring temperatures, the atmosphere remained warm for all the right reasons. Herbert Barrington Slater Council continues to attract an excellent attendance from members and visitors alike, proving that even a sweltering Lodge room can’t dampen Masonic fellowship.
📅 If you’ve never visited HBS Council before, make a note of the next meeting—you’ll receive a warm welcome… although hopefully not quite as warm as this one!
